TechMitra buying guide graphic: best student laptops under ₹50,000, October 2026

The short answer

For one laptop that runs every college app, buy the Dell 15 (Core 3 100U, 8GB, 512GB) at ₹49,990 on Amazon. It comes with Office Home & Student 2024 and a free RAM slot for a later upgrade. For coding, the MSI Modern 14 C7M (Ryzen 5 7530U, 16GB) is one of the few 16GB laptops under ₹50,000, at ₹43,219 on Flipkart while the deal lasts. For the longest battery life, choose the HP OmniBook 3 (Snapdragon X) at its ₹49,990 Amazon sale price, but check that your apps run on Arm first.

This guide is for students and parents buying a first laptop for college, coaching or online classes, with a hard limit of ₹50,000. We picked from models on sale in India right now, using official spec sheets, live listings on Amazon and Flipkart, and the questions Mobivault customers ask at this budget: how much RAM, how long the battery lasts, whether Office is included and what the warranty covers. We haven’t tested these laptops ourselves. This guide is based on official specs, retailer listings and published reviews.

We checked all prices on 11 October 2026, while Amazon’s Great Indian Festival and Flipkart’s festive sale were running. They are listed selling prices. Bank-card offers, coupons and exchange discounts are not included, and prices may go up once the sales end. Two picks depend on the sale: Smartprix’s price tracking shows the MSI Modern 14 and the HP OmniBook 3 both selling for over ₹55,000 a month earlier, so if either goes back above ₹50,000, use the fallback we name in its section.

Note: ₹50,000 buys less in 2026 than it used to. Business Today reported in June 2026 that laptop prices from Dell, HP and Lenovo had reportedly risen by 15–30% this year as memory chips got costlier. Storyboard18 reported that laptops that used to cost ₹30,000–35,000 were moving closer to ₹45,000. That’s why most of our picks have 8GB of RAM.

Our picks

#1 Best overall for college

Dell 15 (DC15250): Core 3 100U, 8GB, 512GB SSD, Office 2024

  • Intel Core 3 100U
  • 8GB DDR4 + free slot
  • 15.6-inch FHD 120Hz
  • Office H&S 2024

This is the safe all-rounder. It has a regular Intel chip, so college software, exam tools and printer drivers will install without fuss, and Office Home & Student 2024 is included with a lifetime licence. Dell’s manual lists two memory slots and a 16GB maximum. This model ships with a single 8GB stick, so you can go to 16GB later, either by adding a second 8GB stick or by swapping in a single 16GB stick (Dell’s manual lists 1 x 16GB as a supported configuration). The 15.6-inch screen runs at 120Hz but is rated at only 250 nits, which is fine indoors but dim near a bright window. Smartprix also tracks this configuration at Croma for ₹44,890 (last updated 26 September), so check Croma before you order.

  • Office Home & Student 2024 in the box
  • Free RAM slot for a 16GB upgrade later
  • 1-year onsite warranty
  • 250-nit screen struggles in bright rooms
  • Indian listings show a small 41 Wh battery
  • Flipkart listings were above ₹50,000 on 11 October

₹49,990 (8GB + 512GB, Amazon)

#2 Lightest and most portable

Acer TravelLite (TL04-41M): 14-inch, Ryzen 3 5400U, 8GB, 512GB SSD

  • 1.34 kg
  • 14-inch Full HD, anti-glare
  • Ryzen 3 5400U
  • Wi-Fi 6

At 1.34 kg, this is the lightest of the five, and it’s the one to pick if the laptop goes to college with you every day. Amazon’s listing describes a metal body, and the Indian listings show an anti-glare Full HD screen, Wi-Fi 6 and a 10Gbps USB-C port. LaptopMedia lists a backlit keyboard, a fingerprint reader, a webcam shutter, Ethernet and USB-C charging for a Ryzen 5 version of this model, but Flipkart’s listing for this Ryzen 3 version (part UN.36HSI.00F) doesn’t mention them, and an Amazon reviewer says their unit has no fingerprint reader, so don’t count on those extras. Office Home & Student 2021 comes with the Amazon listing, not with Flipkart’s. The Ryzen 3 5400U is an older four-core chip. It’s fine for notes, Office, browsing and online classes, but it’s the wrong choice for heavy engineering software.

  • Lightest pick, at 1.34 kg
  • 1-year onsite warranty on the Flipkart listing
  • Almost the same price on Amazon and Flipkart
  • Slowest processor of the five, along with the Aspire Lite
  • Battery capacity isn’t published; Flipkart claims up to 8.5 hours
  • Office only with some Amazon sellers; Flipkart’s listing has none

₹44,490 (8GB + 512GB, Flipkart)

#3 Best for coding and engineering

MSI Modern 14 C7M-062IN: Ryzen 5 7530U, 16GB, 512GB SSD

  • Ryzen 5 7530U, 6 cores
  • 16GB DDR4
  • 1.4 kg
  • USB-C charging

This is one of very few laptops under ₹50,000 with 16GB of RAM, and the only one we found that pairs it with a six-core Ryzen 5. That combination helps when an IDE, a browser full of documentation and a local server are all open at once. The catch is availability. Smartprix shows it in stock at just one store, Flipkart, where a third-party seller has it (Amazon’s listing was out of stock), and the price dropped 33%, or ₹14,478, in the past month, so the deal may not last. MSI lists the 16GB as onboard (soldered), and its 39.3 Wh battery is smaller than the Dell’s and much smaller than the HP’s. If it sells out, Amazon had a 16GB version of the Acer TravelLite (Ryzen 3 5400U) at ₹49,400, which is a slower chip but has the same amount of RAM.

  • 16GB RAM and a 6-core Ryzen 5 under ₹45,000
  • Light at 1.4 kg, with a backlit keyboard
  • Charges over USB-C (Power Delivery)
  • Only on Flipkart at this price, from a third-party seller
  • Small 39.3 Wh battery, so carry the charger
  • RAM can’t be upgraded; no Office

₹43,219 (16GB + 512GB, Flipkart)

#4 Best battery life

HP OmniBook 3 14 (14-hz0056QU): Snapdragon X, 8GB, 512GB SSD

  • Snapdragon X X1-26-100
  • 60 Wh battery
  • 14-inch 1920 × 1200, 300 nits
  • 1.42 kg

91mobiles tested the 16GB version of this laptop, which has the same Snapdragon X chip, and got 18 hours 42 minutes in PCMark 10’s video test. It also has the highest-resolution screen of the five (1920 × 1200, 16:10, 300 nits), a 65W USB-C GaN charger that 91mobiles describes as hardly bigger than a phone charger, and Office Home 2024 plus a year of Microsoft 365 Basic. There are two catches. The 8GB of RAM is soldered, so you can’t add more later. And it’s an Arm-based PC, so check that every app and driver your college needs works on Windows on Arm before you buy. By the end of our check on 11 October, Flipkart’s price had gone up to ₹57,999, so the ₹49,990 deal was on Amazon only. If it goes back above ₹50,000, it’s out of this budget: pick the Dell 15 instead and carry its charger.

  • Best battery result we found: 18h 42m in 91mobiles’ test
  • Sharpest screen of the five (1920 × 1200)
  • Office Home 2024 included
  • 8GB is soldered: no upgrade later
  • Some drivers, antivirus and anti-cheat games won’t run on Arm
  • It sold for over ₹60,000 in September, per Smartprix, so the sale price may not last

₹49,990 (8GB + 512GB, Amazon)

#5 Best budget pick

Acer Aspire Lite (AL15-41): 15.6-inch, Ryzen 3 5400U, 8GB, 512GB SSD

  • 15.6-inch Full HD IPS
  • 8GB DDR4, up to 32GB
  • 512GB SSD
  • 1.59 kg

This is the cheapest laptop we’d still recommend: it has a full 512GB SSD and a Full HD IPS screen, and Acer’s own store says the RAM can be expanded to 32GB. You can buy it at ₹42,990 on Amazon now (Acer’s store had it at ₹46,999) and add memory later when prices settle. It uses the same Ryzen 3 5400U as the TravelLite, so it’s built for notes, Office, browsing and online classes, and the keyboard has a number pad. Acer lists a 36 Wh battery, the smallest of the capacities published for our picks. If the MSI’s ₹43,219 Flipkart deal is still on, that is the better buy for ₹229 more.

  • RAM expandable to 32GB, according to Acer
  • Big 15.6-inch screen and a number pad
  • Lowest price of the five on Amazon
  • Ryzen 3 is the slowest chip here
  • Small 36 Wh battery, according to Acer
  • Carry-in warranty on Flipkart’s listing; no Office

₹42,990 (8GB + 512GB, Amazon)

How to buy a student laptop under ₹50,000

RAM: 16GB if you can, upgradable 8GB if you can’t

For notes, browsing, Office and video classes, 8GB is enough. For coding, engineering software or heavy multitasking, 16GB makes a real difference. At this budget in 2026, 16GB is rare. So the next-best thing is an 8GB laptop that can be upgraded. Look for memory written as “1 x 8GB” or “expandable”, and check the brand’s spec sheet. The Dell 15 has a free slot and the Acer Aspire Lite expands to 32GB. On the MSI and the HP, the RAM is soldered, so what you buy is what you keep.

Storage, screen and processor traps

  • Get 512GB. At this price, many listings come with 256GB SSDs or eMMC storage. Windows updates and college files fill 256GB quickly.
  • Read the display line. Skip listings that say HD, WXGA, 1366 × 768 or TN panel; some of these are on sale right now under ₹45,000. Look for Full HD (1920 × 1080) or 1920 × 1200 with IPS.
  • Check the chip’s model number, not just “i3” or “Ryzen 5”. Some current listings use Celeron chips, or 2019-era chips like the Ryzen 3 3200U and Ryzen 5 3500U. These feel slow next to the Core 3 100U or Ryzen 5 7530U.
  • Ignore the MRP. The HP OmniBook 3 shows an MRP of ₹1,39,545 on Amazon, which makes the “64% off” meaningless. Compare actual selling prices across stores.

Windows 11, Office and Arm laptops

All five come with Windows 11 Home. If you’re replacing an old Windows 10 laptop, there’s no rush: Windows 10 security updates now continue until 12 October 2027 through ESU, so you can wait for the right price. Office comes as standard with only two of our picks. The Dell includes Office Home & Student 2024, and the HP includes Office Home 2024 with a year of Microsoft 365 Basic. The TravelLite’s Amazon listing also bundles Office Home & Student 2021, but its Flipkart listing doesn’t. For the others, ask your college about Office 365 A1. Microsoft gives it free to students with an eligible education email address, and it includes the web versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.

The HP uses a Snapdragon (Arm) chip. According to Microsoft, Windows 11 on Arm runs most apps through emulation, but drivers have to be built for Arm. Some third-party antivirus software can’t be installed, and games that use anti-cheat drivers may not work. If your course needs specific software, an exam browser or a particular printer, confirm it works on Arm first, or buy one of the Intel or AMD picks.

Warranty, seller and student offers

Onsite warranty means an engineer can come to you. With carry-in, you take the laptop to a service centre, so check which one the listing says. Several of the best prices here come from third-party sellers, so buy only where you get a GST invoice. Then register the serial number on the brand’s support site. Some brands run student programmes on their own stores. On 11 October, Acer’s India store listed an 8% student discount on the Aspire Lite (terms apply), but we couldn’t confirm an extra student discount on the other four. If a shop or seller promises a “student price”, get it in writing on the bill.

Mobivault shop note: Before you pay, check that the model and part number on the box and on the sticker under the laptop match the bill. Check that the charger’s wattage matches the listing. Then open Settings → System → About and confirm the processor and installed RAM. If Office is included, open Word once and activate it with your own Microsoft account. Put up a plain white screen and then a plain black one to look for dead pixels, and type a few lines to test every key. Finally, enter the serial number on the brand’s warranty page so the warranty start date is on record.

Our pick

For most students, the Dell 15 is the laptop to buy under ₹50,000. It runs everything, Office is already included, and you can add RAM later. Choose one of the others only if you need what it does best.

  • Coding or engineering? Grab the MSI Modern 14 C7M while its 16GB, ₹43,219 deal lasts.
  • Away from a socket all day? The HP OmniBook 3 has the longest battery, as long as your apps run on Arm and the ₹49,990 sale price holds.
  • Carrying it everywhere? The 1.34 kg Acer TravelLite.
  • Tightest budget? The Acer Aspire Lite, then add RAM later.

FAQ

Is 8GB RAM enough for a college laptop in 2026?

For notes, browsing, Office, online classes and light photo editing, yes. For programming with an IDE, virtual machines, Android Studio or engineering software, 16GB is much more comfortable. If you have to buy 8GB, choose a laptop whose RAM can be upgraded, like the Dell 15 or the Acer Aspire Lite.

Can I get a MacBook under ₹50,000?

Not a new one. Apple’s cheapest laptop, the MacBook Neo, launched in India at ₹69,900 in March 2026, and 91mobiles’ HP OmniBook 3 review mentions a recent price hike. Amazon now shows an MRP of ₹79,900 for the 256GB model, and even in the festive sale on 11 October it was ₹68,390.

Will a Snapdragon laptop run my college software?

Most Windows apps run, through Microsoft’s emulation. Apps that depend on their own drivers may not, including some antivirus programs and games with anti-cheat. Hardware that needs its own driver, such as some printers, needs an Arm version too. Check your course’s software list, or ask the software maker, before you buy the HP OmniBook 3.

Do I need to buy Microsoft Office separately?

Not with the Dell 15 or the HP OmniBook 3, which come with Office. For the others, check whether your college email qualifies for Microsoft’s free Office 365 A1 plan, which gives you the web versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Microsoft 365 for the web is also free with a personal Microsoft account.

Should I wait for laptop prices to come down?

If you need a laptop for this semester, buy now. In March 2026, Storyboard18 reported IDC’s view that memory-driven price pressure could last six to seven quarters, with relief possibly only in the second half of 2027.
