The short answer
The 5G icon appears only when four conditions are all met: your network offers 5G at your location, your recharge covers 5G, your handset supports India’s 5G bands and runs its newest software, and 5G is chosen for whichever SIM handles mobile data. Open the phone’s mobile-network settings, switch the network type to 5G, reboot, and then use your operator’s app to confirm plan and coverage.
In this article7 sections
1. First, confirm 5G coverage at your location
| Network | Where 5G stands (October 2026) | How to check coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Jio | Standalone 5G, branded “True 5G”, which includes the 700 MHz band that can reach inside buildings | jio.com/5g or the MyJio app |
| Airtel | 5G Plus, non-standalone (it runs together with 4G) | Airtel Thanks app |
| Vi | 5G live in selected cities since 2025, with more being added | Coverage map at myvi.in/5g |
| BSNL | Mobile 5G not available yet. In June 2025 it launched a SIM-less 5G home-broadband service in Hyderabad; 5G for phones is still under testing | — |
Living in a 5G city doesn’t guarantee a signal everywhere: it can weaken inside buildings or vanish in certain pockets. When the coverage checker shows nothing for your spot, no phone setting will fix that. And if your calls keep dropping indoors as well, Wi-Fi calling lets them go through your home Wi-Fi instead.
2. Check whether your recharge includes 5G
- Jio: plans offering 2GB or more per day come with unlimited 5G. The lowest-priced 28-day option is ₹349 (2GB/day), and the ₹198 pack (2GB/day for 14 days) carries unlimited 5G too. If you’re on a 1GB or 1.5GB per-day plan, buy a “True Unlimited Upgrade” voucher (₹51, ₹101 or ₹151, based on your plan’s validity); it stays active for as long as the base plan does.
- Airtel: select prepaid plans carry unlimited 5G (₹349 and up, per August 2026 reports). You have to claim it through the Airtel Thanks app (“Claim Unlimited 5G Data”). Noticed 5G eating into your daily quota after recharging? Open the app and claim it once more.
- Vi: unlimited 5G is an introductory offer that applies to prepaid unlimited plans starting at ₹299 and postpaid starting at ₹451. It works only where Vi has 5G and comes with a fair-use cap of 300GB per month.
Tip: after a fresh recharge or a new SIM, 5G may not kick in straight away. According to vivo’s support team, operator activation can take anywhere from 4 to 48 hours, so give it a full day before attempting bigger fixes.
3. Switch your phone’s network type to 5G
Pick whichever SIM handles your mobile data and change its network type to 5G. Expect menu labels to vary slightly from one software version to the next.
Samsung Galaxy phones
Open Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Network mode and select the entry beginning with 5G. Its exact label is not the same on every model.
Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO on HyperOS
Head to Settings → Mobile networks → [your data SIM] → Preferred network type → Prefer 5G. If your phone still runs an older MIUI version, that first menu is labelled “SIM cards & mobile networks” instead.
vivo or iQOO phones
The path in vivo’s official guide is Settings → Network & internet → SIM card & mobile network → [SIM]. Select 5G (preferred) there and then restart the handset. Newer software builds may name that first menu Mobile network.
realme or OPPO phones
On realme UI, go to Settings → Mobile network → [SIM] → Preferred network type → 5G. OPPO owners will find Preferred network type inside the same SIM settings; in older ColorOS builds the first menu goes by “SIM card & mobile data”.
Google Pixel phones
Follow Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → [SIM] → Preferred network type → 5G (recommended). Seeing 5G only now and then? Google says its Adaptive connectivity feature may be limiting it.
Apple iPhone
5G requires an iPhone 12 or a newer model. Open Settings → Mobile Data → Mobile Data Options → Voice & Data and select 5G On or 5G Auto. With 5G Auto, the phone drops to 4G to save battery whenever 5G wouldn’t give a noticeable speed boost. It’s also worth looking for a carrier settings update under Settings → General → About.
4. 5G still missing? Try these fixes in order
- Switch Airplane mode on, wait 10 seconds and switch it off, or simply reboot the phone.
- Update the phone to its newest software version, since early 5G support frequently comes via updates.
- With two SIMs in the phone, confirm that the one carrying the 5G plan is selected for mobile data, because data travels through that SIM alone.
- Is your SIM really old? Samsung recommends a 5G-compatible SIM, so check with your operator’s store about a replacement that keeps the same number.
- Disable any battery-saving mode, then check again. On iPhone 12 and 13, Low Power Mode switches 5G off except for tasks such as video streaming and big downloads; on iPhone 12 it disables standalone 5G as well. Pixel’s Battery Saver switches 5G off.
- If nothing else works, reset the network settings (Pixel path: Settings → System → Reset options → Reset Mobile Network Settings).
Warning: on a Pixel this option clears just the mobile network settings. Many other phones bundle everything into one reset (for example “Reset Wi-Fi, mobile networks and Bluetooth”), which wipes your saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings too. Note down your Wi-Fi password before going ahead.
5. Make sure your handset works on India’s 5G bands
Being sold as a “5G” phone doesn’t guarantee support for every band your network relies on, and imported handsets are the usual suspects. Visit the manufacturer’s official specifications page for your exact model and check that these bands are listed:
| n78 (3.3 GHz band) | Primary 5G band used by Jio, Airtel and Vi |
| n28 (700 MHz) | Long-range band that helps Jio’s 5G reach indoors; Jio is the only operator holding it |
| n258 (26 GHz) | mmWave, mostly used in India for fixed-wireless home broadband. Phones don’t need it to get 5G |
Sometimes an operator app shows “device not supported” simply because a newer model hasn’t been added to its list. vivo points out that this message by itself won’t block 5G, so verify the bands before blaming the handset.
Mobivault shop note: most people who come to our Mobivault counter asking about missing 5G have one of two issues: a recharge plan without 5G, or a network type that’s still on 4G in settings. Sorting out those two solves the majority of cases.
Questions people often ask
Why is my speed slow even with the 5G icon on?
How strong the signal is and how busy the network is count for more than the icon. Apple notes that, in rare cases, the 5G icon may appear without 5G coverage, while Google says seeing the icon doesn’t mean the phone is on 5G at that moment. Run speed tests at a few different spots; 5G inside a building is often weaker than outside.
Will I have to get a new SIM for 5G?
In most cases, no. Airtel confirms its 5G runs on your current 4G SIM. A very old SIM can create trouble, though, and getting it swapped at your operator’s store sorts that out.
Is BSNL 5G available?
Not on phones so far. In June 2025, BSNL soft-launched a SIM-less 5G home-broadband service in Hyderabad. Earlier target dates for mobile 5G have been missed; in August 2026, the head of BSNL Kerala said testing was underway with December 2026 as the target, subject to its 4G network stabilising.
Is 5G harder on the battery?
It can be, particularly when the 5G signal is weak. That’s the reason iPhones include “5G Auto”, which drops back to 4G whenever 5G wouldn’t make a difference.
